What:   A Pre-Symposium Workshop of the 11th International Coral Reef Symposium, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida: Workshop on the Implementation of the CARRUS Alliance for the Comparative Analysis of Reef Resilience Under Stress

When: Sunday, July 6, 2008, 9:30 AM to 5 PM

Where:
Main Conference Facility, Room TBA

NOTES:

This day-long workshop is open to attendance by up to two representatives from each long-term, large-scale coral reef monitoring program currently underway. The objective will be to form an international organization to facilitate comparative scientific investigation and to assemble information on the successes and failures of management actions. If interested in participating, contact the organizer by March 1, 2008 or earlier. More information can be found in : CARRUS Alliance Concept Paper 2007 [
DOC; PDF].

The primary objective is to form an alliance among existing and new integrated research and monitoring programs around the world to:

    • Improve understanding of cause and effect relationships in coral reef degradation and recovery via well-coordinated, comparative interdisciplinary research
    • Improve management by providing broad access to collections of well-studied and documented management interventions and their impacts, and summarized in ‘best-practice guides’
    • Develop and validate analytical, modeling and visualization tools
    • Build capacity and share expertise and research methods
    • Provide broad access to major scientific data sets
    • Use online participatory visits to study areas to educate students and the public about coral reefs and the importance of interdisciplinary reef research
